I am usually more than happy to see a movie by myself but for the new Pixar masterpiece Wall-E I knew I wanted Justin there with me to share the experience. I think we both walked away entertained and moved. The movie was nothing short of gorgeous. I often get sad when I think that the days of classic Disney animation are gone. I think about how my kids will never wait in line at the theater at a one, or a mega three screen theater like I did when I was a kid to see Beauty and the Beast or The Little Mermaid. Instead they will most likely see Pixar-like movies. And even though it makes me sad, the one thing that makes it all better is that some of the new movies aimed at kids are this awesome and just continue to get better.
In the movie Wall-E, a robot and the main character, for whatever reason likes to watch the movie Hello Dolly. When I was a kid I always had cable and along with cable came access to tons of movies. One movie that I remember seeing over and over again was What's Up Doc starring Barbara Streisand. I marveled at how quick witted she was and her cool clothes and had no idea whatsoever that she was this huge star. I was just hooked on her and soon I would stop and watch anything that had her in it, including Hello Dolly. It seemed like a really odd choice for Wall-E to watch at first but when you think about Hello Dolly you realize that in Hello Dolly, Dolly(Streisand's character), was just someone who was looking for love. Even though she played a matchmaker you were always hoping that Dolly would find love herself.
In Wall-E, we find him on an Earth that seems hopeless and desolate to the audience, but here was this little robot with a cockroach for a friend and a desire to be in love. It turns into a beautiful movie not only about love but about how we as humans don't have to sit back and watch as our earth becomes a wasteland. Wall-E represents hope and he reminds us that maybe love is enough to make it all worth fighting for. It's a truly remarkable film and one that I look forward to experiencing again and again.
